Decision checklist
The two-key legal-identity handshake unlocks contact only when institutional identity and present-channel control are each supported by independent attributable evidence; review marker 119 applies this device only to “verify lender and channel Mauritius” and the evidence boundaries named on this page.
Capture the claimed identity untouched
Before clicking, replying or calling, preserve the displayed legal name, trading name, address, number, email domain, website, profile handle and any licence or registration claim exactly as received. Add time, device and entry route. Do not improve spelling, expand abbreviations or copy details from a different message. This first plate records the claim rather than proving it. It also prevents a later edited profile or deleted message from erasing what the household actually saw.
Separate institution from channel
Draw two columns. The institution column asks which legal person is claimed and what official evidence supports that identity. The channel column asks who controls the exact contact now requesting attention, data or money. Evidence in one column cannot fill the other. A genuine organisation can be impersonated through a false profile, and a polished channel can name a real institution without authority. Keep both keys locked until each question has its own attributable answer.
Locate an independent route
Leave the received message and find an official contact without using its links, QR codes, attachments or callback number. Record how the route was located and the date checked. The Bank of Mauritius alert may justify caution about social-media contact in its stated context; it does not certify the replacement route selected by the reader. Compare the claimed name and channel with information obtained independently, and treat inconsistencies as unresolved rather than choosing the more reassuring version.
Issue a narrow channel challenge
Ask the independently reached organisation to confirm whether it controls the exact domain, number, profile or payment instruction and whether the named communication relates to it. Provide only the minimum reference needed; do not forward identity files, passwords or an entire application package. Record who answered, through which verified route and the precise scope of the answer. Confirmation of a domain does not automatically validate every employee, attachment, beneficiary or product claim sent through it.
Test destination before disclosure
For any requested document, list recipient, purpose, fields required, transmission method and receipt. Personal-data control remains a separate decision even after institutional identity is established. The Data Protection Office complaint page supports the existence of its published complaint path, not a blanket conclusion about lawful processing. If the recipient or purpose changes, repeat the handshake. Never send additional material merely because the contact knows details from an earlier message.
Test money instructions independently
Record beneficiary name, account details, payment reason, amount and deadline, then confirm them using the independent route. Do not use a token transfer as a test and do not rely on screenshots of supposed receipts. Pressure, secrecy, payment to an unrelated person or a changed destination keeps the money key locked. The scam alert informs caution but does not decide whether an individual event is fraudulent; the household stop is based on unresolved ownership and destination. Add a split-key rehearsal using two household reviewers who work independently. Reviewer A receives only the claimed institutional identity and must locate an attributable official route. Reviewer B receives only the disputed channel and must list the facts needed to establish control. They compare results only after both records are complete. Agreement based on the same original message does not count as independence. If the official contact confirms the institution but cannot confirm the exact profile, number, domain or payment instruction, the channel key stays locked. If the channel appears controlled but the contracting legal person remains unclear, the identity key stays locked. Record which key failed, who owns the unanswered question and what evidence could reopen it. Rotate the exercise whenever a new contact, redirected page, replacement upload link or changed beneficiary appears; trust cannot migrate automatically between channels. The rehearsal closes with three prohibited inferences: channel confirmation is not product availability, institutional identity is not approval, and both keys together are not proof that proposed terms suit the household. This adversarial split keeps a familiar brand from carrying an unverified request across the final disclosure or payment boundary.
Preserve a verification transcript
Assemble the original claim, independent route, questions asked, exact responses, remaining differences and household decision. Keep original files read-only and label later copies. If a complaint becomes necessary, Bank of Mauritius material or the Ombudsperson guideline must be checked for current scope and prerequisites rather than treated as interchangeable channels. The transcript supplies chronology and evidence only. It does not assert regulatory status beyond what the competent publication actually states.
Apply the two-key stop rule
Proceed to ordinary comparison only when both legal identity and control of the present channel are supported, requested disclosure has a stated purpose and any payment destination has been independently confirmed. Otherwise stop contact, preserve evidence and use an appropriate official reporting or complaint route. Even a completed handshake does not validate rates, charges, affordability or approval claims. Those questions return to written product evidence, household capacity and voluntary contract review before any commitment.
