Approximately 1 in 5 South African credit reports contains errors that could lower your score or block loan applications. The NCA gives you the right to dispute and correct these errors — free of charge. Here's exactly how to do it.

Step-by-Step Dispute Process

1

Get Your Free Credit Reports

Request reports from all four bureaus — errors may appear on some and not others:

TransUnion: mytransunion.co.za
Experian: experian.co.za
2

Identify Errors

Check each section: personal details, credit accounts, enquiries (who checked your credit), payment history, and adverse/judgement listings. Mark anything incorrect.

3

Gather Evidence

Collect: proof of payment (bank statements, receipts), correspondence with the creditor, account statements showing correct balance, SAPS case number (if fraud).

4

File the Dispute

Each bureau has an online dispute form. Upload your evidence. Be specific: state the account number, what's wrong, and what the correct information should be.

5

Wait 20 Business Days

The bureau contacts the creditor to verify. The creditor has 20 business days to respond. If they don't respond, the information is removed by default. You'll receive the outcome by email/SMS.

6

Escalate if Needed

If the bureau doesn't fix the error: escalate to the Credit Ombud (0861 662 837, free) or the NCR (0860 627 627). The Credit Ombud's decision is binding on the bureau.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I get my free credit report in South Africa?

Under the NCA (Section 72), you're entitled to one free credit report per year from each bureau. TransUnion: mytransunion.co.za (instant online). Experian: experian.co.za (instant online). XDS: xds.co.za (request online, emailed in 2-5 days). Compuscan: mycompuscan.co.za (instant online). Check all four — information differs between bureaus. Some lenders only report to 1-2 bureaus, so errors may exist on some reports and not others.

What errors can I dispute on my credit report?

Common disputable errors: (1) Accounts that aren't yours (possible identity fraud), (2) Debts already paid but still showing as outstanding, (3) Duplicate listings of the same debt, (4) Incorrect balances or payment amounts, (5) Wrong personal information (name, ID number, address), (6) Accounts listed as default when you were paying on time, (7) Old information that should have expired (e.g. judgement older than 5 years), (8) Closed accounts still showing as open.

How long does a credit bureau dispute take?

By law (NCA Section 72(4)), the credit bureau must investigate within 20 business days. In practice: Simple corrections (wrong name, address): 5-10 business days. Payment disputes (debt status): 15-20 business days. Fraud investigations: up to 40 business days with your consent. If they can't resolve it in 20 days, they must notify you of the delay and provide a reason.

What if the credit bureau doesn't fix the error?

If the bureau doesn't resolve your dispute within 20 business days, escalate to: (1) Credit Ombud — free dispute resolution service. Call 0861 662 837 or email ombud@creditombud.org.za. (2) NCR — file a complaint at 0860 627 627. (3) Information Regulator — if it's a POPIA (data protection) issue. The Credit Ombud process takes 2-4 weeks and is free. Their decision is binding on the credit bureau.

Can I remove a legitimate default from my credit report?

No — legitimate negative information cannot be removed before its expiry period. However, you can: (1) Pay the debt — paid defaults are removed after 1 year (vs 5 years unpaid), (2) Negotiate a settlement — get written confirmation of settlement and the creditor updates the status, (3) Request a 'consumer note' — a 100-word explanation added to your report explaining circumstances (e.g. medical emergency, retrenchment). This doesn't change the listing but provides context to future lenders.

Responsible Lending Notice

Your right to dispute credit information is protected by Section 72 of the National Credit Act and the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA). It is free of charge — no company should charge you for a dispute.

Be wary of "credit repair" companies that charge fees. You can do everything yourself for free using the steps above.
